Agree with much of the positivity expressed above, but there were certainly some issues that needed to be addressed. There was a beehive in the roof overhang of the Rinconcito and bees had gotten inside. My wife was stung by one inside our room, and we killed a couple upstairs where her parents were staying. In addition, in the lower Rinconcito room there is s serious problem where when the bathhoom light is on the shower knobs become ELECTRIFIED. I kid you not my wife and I were both SHOCKED MULTIPLE TIMES whilst trying to turn the shower off until we figured out that if we showered in the dark this wasn't a problem. She told some of the people who worked there and was shrugged off. There was also a light that didn't turn on in our bedroom and the maps for local hikes are incomplete to the point of being almost useless for self-guided stuff. Overall the woodwork, the food, the space and atmosphere in general were great. But whoever the fixers there are need to get to work!
We spent a couple nights at Mama Hilda's and absolutely loved it. The meals were fabulous, the rooms clean and a quick fire in the evenings warmed the place to a cozy temperature in the evenings. But what makes this hostal shine is the people who run it. They are warm, caring, and very helpful. Mama Hilda's should be on everyone's must visit list!!!
I have been living in Ecuador from end of 2007 till half 2010. One of the things I did as a volunteer for our foundation, was teaching English at the school in Chugchilán. My home in the beautiful Andes village was the hostal of Mama Hilda and I really really loved it! Papi and Mami are such friendly, heartily people, as all the other personnel. I really miss you all and I am happy that I will be coming back at the end of 2011. I am sure that I will again spend wonderful times with you! Muchísimas gracias por su amistad, siempre pensando en ustedes -inecita
I went to this hostal last year on a recommendation - loved it. Rooms was well furnished and clean, food was great, Mama Hilda - what a doll! Really recommend this hostal to anyone on the Quilotoa loop!
